Focusing taps into the essence of change.Focusing evolved from research that has influenced much of the somatically-oriented, mindfulness-based work being done today. It has its roots in existential and phenomenological philosophy as well as client-centered and relational therapies. It is an experiential body-centered process that restores emotional regulation, promotes present awareness and fosters empathetic relatedness. Focusing is easily combinable with other clinical orientations and healing modalities and is itself a doorway into a grounded sense of spirituality and wellness.

Focusing Level Four: The Radical Acceptance of Everything

In the Level Four workshop you’ll develop a compassionate approach to inner critics, thoughts and distractions, and resistance. You’ll learn what to do when your Focusing companion or client feels nothing or too much. You’ll be able to identify when different parts of a client’s process are interfering. For example, “I hate the part of me that always gives in” involves a part that gives in and a part that hates it for doing so. This is so important in addressing complex issues and trauma. Each part or aspect of the whole experience needs to be listened to and given a chance to unwind.

Focusing Level Three: Facilitating the Inner Relationship

Now that you have some experience and practice, you’re ready to take the next steps in facilitating the process more deeply with others. In the Level Three workshop we introduce Facilitative language as a way to help clients stay with their felt experience more easily. We break the Focusing process itself down, so as practitioners, you can see the process in more detail and identify where the client is in their process so facilitative language is most effective. We also introduce working with client process, such as blocks to action and decision-making.

Therapeutic Dead Ends: Finding a Way Forward

Dead ends form when clients are unable to move beyond their familiar thoughts and feelings about the situations they bring to treatment. Therapy becomes repetitive and clients leave your practice. Breaking through those dead ends is hidden in the “fuzzy edges” of a clients implicit bodily experience of their problematic situation. Focusing is a body-centered process of entering that territory gently, allowing for the body’s inherit wisdom to unwind and move forward. Please join me, as I introduce you to Focusing and share exercises that will shift your practice forward through the stuck places in therapy. Your good clients will stay longer, move past common road blocks and experience the essence of change.

Focusing Level One: Self in Presence

Level One is the first in a four-workshop series that transforms our relationship to our problems and teaches how this change process can be smoothly incorporated into any therapeutic modality. Learn more about my Focusing Training Program.
